Welcome to DUT Community Engagement

Engagement at DUT is the portfolio under the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research Innovation and Engagement (DVC-RIE). The Engagement champions’ initiatives, efforts and activities focus on establishing the University as a responsible, relevant, and active partner of the community in addressing the needs of society. Through Engagement, the University facilitates collaboration between DUT staff, students, as well as alumni and the community for meaningful university-community engagements.

Engagement approach

As engagement at the DUT matures and gets entrenched into institutional practice, it will become embedded within the University’s culture, identity, structures and systems. Its purpose and value will be shared across the University and understood as part of its enduring commitment to relevance and impact on society. Engagement will be recognised as fundamental to the University’s success as a university seeking to advance and share knowledge in a context characterised by collaborative approaches to local and global challenges. Engagement performance will be evaluated and celebrated alongside teaching-learning, innovation, research and entrepreneurship, recognising the value created by the alignment of all four.

There are four engagement pillars identified within the Engagement Framework 2030. Each pillar addresses one or more cross-cutting strategic objectives of ENVISION2030. They are the following:

PILLAR 1

Engagement that is integrated into the academic and research programmes of the University with accreditable outputs (e.g., credits for students or research outputs for staff), including research as part of the research teaching nexus.

PILLAR 2

Scholarly service to the broader society that is not integrated into academic programmes.

PILLAR 3

Community involvement and interaction on a voluntary basis, such as non-academic community outreach.

PILLAR 4

Societal development programmes through service provision, training and mentorship, including entrepreneurship and innovation, and any additional opportunities that contribute to the advancement of the broader society.
